Town of Holly Springs issued the following announcement on Jan. 27.
The Town of Holly Springs celebrated the grand opening of a new sidewalk and crosswalk on Sunset Lake Road today. The project provides residents in the Wescott neighborhood and beyond a safe way to cross Optimist Farm Road to get to the Sunset Lake Commons shopping center at the corner of Holly Springs Road and Sunset Lake Road.
"We asked residents to visualize the ideal future of Holly Springs in our land use planning process and they identified walkability as a major priority for the town," said Holly Springs Mayor Dick Sears. "This project is just one of many we have planned to help folks safely walk to the wonderful shops and restaurants that are opening daily in Holly Springs."
Mayor Sears was joined by Town Council Members, staff and residents to be the first to walk down the sidewalk and use the designated crosswalk. By doing all the work in-house versus contracting with external design and construction companies, the Town of Holly Springs saved taxpayers thousands of dollars. The project was designed by Town Engineer Mary DePina with help from David Summers and entirely constructed by Public Works staff, including Chad Zimmerman, Billy Garner, Dan Eckert, Roger Dos Santos, William Boone, and others. Residents who have spoken out at public meetings about the need for more sidewalks are pleased that their concerns were heard.
"As a long-time resident of Wescott and a four-year member of our board we are delighted to see this project come to its conclusion," said Holly Springs resident Lorrie Volland.
The next sidewalk project that Holly Springs staff will design and construct will connect the Oak Hall Subdivision to Ting Park, allowing residents walkability between the park and revitalized downtown district.
