A Republican Wake County sheriff candidate was arrested on Oct. 1 for allegedly driving while impaired.
Sheriff candidate David Blackwelder, 35, was arrested on North Main Street in Holly Springs, ABC 11 reported about the incident.
Blackwelder is a Wake Technical Community College police officer, ABC 11 reported, who previously worked for the City of Creedmoor Police Department.
Blackwelder, a Republican candidate, was planning to run against the current Wake County sheriff, Gerald Baker, when his term is up in 2022, ABC 11 reported.
Blackwelder is also the president of the Wake County chapter of the North Carolina Sheriff Police Alliance, the news media reported.
Blackwelder has been critical of Baker since he took office in 2018, the News and Observer reported. Soon after Baker took office, Blackwelder said he would run against him in 2022.
"Like everyone accused, I look forward to the opportunity to present my case in court," Blackwelder said, CBS 17 reported.
