Co-chairs of the Senate Elections Committee are demanding that the North Carolina State Board of Elections and Attorney General Josh Stein hand over communications regarding the settlement they made with March Elias, Gov. Roy Cooper's former lawyer.
Sens. Ralph Hise (R-Mitchell), Warren Daniel (R-Burke) and Paul Newton (R-Cabarrus) demanded to be supplied with "copies of all communications" the elections board and Stein had with the lawyer after the NCSBE and Stein allegedly "ambushed their co-defendants" and settled the lawsuit filed by Elias, according to a post on Senate Leader Phil Berger's (R-Rockingham) Medium website.
"If this collusive settlement was so noncontroversial, why did the partisan Board of Elections go to such lengths to keep it secret from legislators? They knew exactly what they were doing when they secretly decided to rewrite state election laws in the middle of the election," Newton said on Berger's press website.
