TOWN OF HOLLY SPRINGS: MLK Jr. Committee will Honor Surviving Members of the Holly Springs Athletics

Awardrecognize

Town of Holly Springs issued the following announcement on June 17.

In recognition of Juneteenth, the Holly Springs MLK Jr. Committee will honor surviving members of the Holly Springs Athletics, which was part of a local Negro Baseball League from the 1940s to the 1970s.

The ceremony will take place Sunday, June 19 at 5 p.m. before the Holly Springs Salamanders game at Ting Park. State Sen. Sydney Batch is scheduled to speak as part of the Juneteenth commemoration.

The Holly Springs Athletics once played on a field about a block from where Ting Stadium is today. In those days, Holly Springs was very small, without a stoplight or grocery store. The weekend baseball games were just about the only source of entertainment for the community.

The MLK Jr. Committee thanks UNC Rex Healthcare, the Salamanders, and the Town of Holly Springs for its support.
