TOWN OF HOLLY SPRINGS: Widening of Holly Springs Road Gets Underway

Roadsignclosed

Town of Holly Springs issued the following announcement on Apr. 19.

After years of planning, the Town of Holly Springs has shovels in the ground today April 20 to kick off the town’s  largest-ever roadway project, the widening of Holly Springs Road from Flint Point Lane to Sunset Lake Road.  The expansion of this vital crosstown connection will help absorb the increase in traffic coming to this growing community from the complete 540 project, which includes an interchange onto Holly Springs Road near Sunset Lake Road.

The widening of Holly Springs Road to four lanes will also include safe bicycle and pedestrian routes near two Wake County Schools - Holly Ridge Elementary and Holly Ridge Middle.  Construction activity near the schools is not expected before late this year and will begin on the opposite side of the Road.

Completion of the 1.5-mile long project, which includes a new four-lane bridge over Middle Creek, is likely to take about three years.

Minimal effects to traffic are expected during at least the first few months of roadwork, which will begin with tree-clearing in the vicinity of the existing, flood-prone culvert over Middle Creek. Drivers should watch for construction crews even though the work will be out of the roadway.

Holly Springs Road will remain open throughout the project. Any lane closures and traffic shifts will be minimized to the extent possible and will be avoided during peak hours.

Throughout the project, the Town of Holly Springs will keep nearby property owners and others informed of current and upcoming stages of work. The project website at www.hollyspringsnc.gov/roadwork includes an interactive map where people can view progress while also leaving questions or feedback for project engineers.

Replacing the existing 20-foot-long box culvert at Middle Creek will be a four-lane bridge that is 150 feet long and 12 feet higher to alleviate flooding. In addition to reducing the vertical dip of the roadway, Holly Springs Road will be made safer by lessening the curve.

Construction crews will build two lanes parallel to the existing creek crossing. After that is done, two-way traffic will be moved onto the new lanes so that crews can demolish the culvert and build the other two lanes. Bridge work is likely to last throughout 2023.

Starting in late 2024, a roundabout will be built at the entrance to Holly Ridge Elementary at Cobblepoint Way. It will improve safe access to the schools and allow for increased traffic flow.

Holly Springs Road widening is among the transportation bond projects that town voters approved in 2018.
