Town of Holly Springs issued the following announcement on Apr. 27.
The Town Council’s April 19 meeting was virtually out of this world as Council members recognized Holly Springs High students who are sending their research into space! Holly Springs High is one of only 57 schools in the entire country that NASA chose for this honor.
Members of the Aeronautics & Engineering Club were honored for their project on artificial gravity. Their work could have practical applications in allowing longer space flights - such as a trip to Mars - by avoiding the harm that bodies experience in anti-gravity.
“I can’t be any more proud of these guys and young ladies,” said Tiffanni Craig, a physics teacher at the school and club’s advisor.
Craig said that NASA sent $1,500 to the students to build the project. They’re on a short deadline to complete the work by the end of the school year.
The students will at least get to watch a livestream of "their" rocket launch, but Craig hopes to be able to take them to California to watch the flight in person. The project will be launched in January 2023 on a suborbital rocket by UP Aerospace.
Volunteer Appreciation
Mayor Sean Mayefskie proclaimed Volunteer Appreciation Week, recognizing the hundreds of volunteers who selflessly offer their time to benefit the Holly Springs community in a variety of ways. This year’s theme for the week is Empathy in Action.
Volunteers staff the reception desk in the lobby of Town Hall. Volunteers also are instrumental to the Parks and Recreation Department, helping make it possible to provide affordable programs and services. They volunteer to coach in Town youth athletics programs; serve as ushers and ticket-takers at the Cultural Center and special events; and as beautification ambassadors on greenways and in parks.
540 Extension Update
Dennis Jernigan of the N.C. Turnpike Authority briefed the Council on the Complete 540 toll road extension through Holly Springs. The project includes an interchange under construction on Holly Springs Road near Sunset Lake Road.
Development Approvals
At its April 19 meeting, the Council also approved:
- A master plan for Optimist Commons, which will include a day-care and residential component off Optimist Farm Road.
- A preliminary plan for the Carolina Springs Phase 2 development in northwest Holly Springs.
- Adjustments to the development plan for Rhamkatte Plaza at the corner of Holly Springs Road and Bass Lake Road.
