The North Carolina Courage announced on Monday their decision to waive defenders Julia Dorsey and Landy Mertz. This announcement comes ahead of the team's full end-of-season roster decisions set for Tuesday.
Both Dorsey and Mertz, selected in the 2024 draft, debuted professionally during their rookie seasons. Mertz played her first professional match with North Carolina, while Dorsey made her debut while on loan to Dallas Trinity FC in the USL Super League.
Julia Dorsey was a third-round pick from the University of North Carolina. During her college career, she was a two-sport athlete but missed her senior soccer season due to an injury sustained in lacrosse. In August, she was loaned to Dallas Trinity FC, where she gained regular playing time in the fall segment of their inaugural season.
Landy Mertz, a fourth-round pick from Pittsburgh, earned recognition as a two-time All-ACC performer. She entered professional play on May 24 as a substitute at the Houston Dash during regular season play. On July 31, she scored her first professional goal against Monterrey in the NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup group stage, aiding North Carolina's advancement to the semifinals.
After these roster changes and with the waiver wire period beginning, North Carolina Courage will have 23 active players remaining on their roster, along with one player out on loan and another listed as injured.
