The North Carolina Courage has announced the departure of Curt Johnson, their Chief Soccer Officer. Johnson has decided to leave the club to pursue other opportunities, and an international search for his replacement will begin immediately.
Steve Malik, Courage Majority Owner and Chairperson, will collaborate with Bobby Hammond, Senior Vice President/Assistant General Manager, to manage day-to-day technical operations until a new appointment is made. The timing of Johnson's resignation was planned in consultation with Malik to ensure minimal disruption to the organization.
Johnson has been part of the North Carolina Football Club for 14 years and worked with the Courage since their relocation from Western New York after the 2016 NWSL season. Under his leadership, the team achieved significant success, winning seven league trophies including three NWSL Shields, two NWSL Championships, two Challenge Cups, and the 2018 International Champions Cup. The team's regular season record during his tenure was 87 wins, 48 losses, and 31 draws. They reached the playoffs in six out of seven full seasons.
Initially joining as President of the Carolina RailHawks in 2011, Johnson managed both men's and women's teams concurrently from 2017 through 2023. He helped North Carolina FC win the USL League One Championship in 2023 before focusing solely on the Courage.
Malik expressed gratitude for Johnson's contributions: “We are incredibly grateful for Curt’s 14 years with the North Carolina Football Club. His expertise and vision have been vital to our sustained on-field success... Our focus now is a worldwide search for the next leader... We will be extensive and thorough in our search to ensure we find the right fit.”
Reflecting on his career, Johnson stated: “As I reflect on my nearly 50-year involvement in soccer here in the Triangle... I’m proud to have played a part in building a youth-to-pro club that everyone... can be proud of."
He further added: "The Courage have experienced unparalleled on-field success... I’m forever grateful to Steve Malik for this opportunity... Most importantly, a huge thank you to my wife, my family, and friends for their incredible support.”
Johnson grew up playing soccer at Capital Area Soccer Club (now NCFC Youth) and is a member of various sports halls of fame. He began his professional career with adidas and Richmond Kickers before serving as General Manager of Kansas City Wizards (now Sporting Kansas City), where he led them to multiple victories including the MLS Cup in 2000.
