The North Carolina Courage has announced the signing of defender Brooklyn Courtnall to a three-year contract, extending through the 2027 NWSL season. This move marks the first time the club has signed a collegiate player under the new post-draft process.
Courtnall, who played for the University of Southern California, was a four-year starter from 2021 to 2024. During her college career, she appeared in 78 matches and earned multiple accolades including being named a first-team All-American in her senior year. Her performance helped lead USC to the Big 10 regular season title and reach the NCAA quarterfinals.
"I’m so grateful to sign with the Courage and to join such an amazing organization," Courtnall stated. "I can’t wait to get started and grow in this competitive environment."
Courage Head Coach Sean Nahas praised Courtnall's versatility and understanding of the game. "This is a great signing for our club to bring in someone of Brooklyn’s quality," Nahas said. He added that Courtnall was highly valued by other teams but their shared values made her decision clear.
Courtnall also brings international experience from her time with Canada's Youth National Team, notably participating in the 2022 Under-20 FIFA Women’s World Cup where she contributed significantly to securing a bronze medal.
Coming from an athletic family, Courtnall follows in the footsteps of her father Russ Courtnall, a former NHL player. Her siblings have also pursued sports at competitive levels.
Courtnall's contract begins on January 1, and she will join North Carolina Courage for preseason training starting mid-January.
